The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a safety alert for a prescription drug that is linked to serious adverse reactions to the active ingredient in Viagra. The drug was found to be associated with heart problems, blood pressure fluctuations, and sudden death.
The drug’s label states that patients with low platelet blood levels are at a higher risk of developing a condition called thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). TTP is a type of blood disorder characterized by the presence of blood clots (blood veins and platelets) in the legs, ankles, and feet. Symptoms of TTP include fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, tinnitus, confusion, and seizures.
FDA issued a safety alert for the drug’s use in men who have had an erection lasting more than four hours and who have had loss of libido or loss of erection, priapism (prolonged erection) or other sexual dysfunction after taking Viagra, its active ingredient.
The drug’s label states that patients with TTP are at a higher risk of developing a condition called vasculogenic retinopathy (VR). The warning emphasizes the need for timely and appropriate treatment. The FDA has advised consumers not to take Viagra without first consulting with a doctor or pharmacist.
“This adverse reaction warning does not apply to Viagra. Viagra was the only drug approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 1998,” said FDA director of product development, Dr. Janet Woodcock, in a release. “This alert also applies to other ED drugs, such as Levitra, Cialis, and Staxyn.”
“We have worked with numerous health care providers to ensure that all of our physicians and pharmacists are aware of the potential serious adverse reactions that patients may face when taking this prescription drug,” said Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “These reactions can include the following: chest pain, indigestion, back pain, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, flushing, upset stomach, dizziness, and nasal congestion. These adverse reactions are potentially serious, and it is important to be aware of them promptly.”
